What Happens After You Sign a Franchise Agreement? From Signing to Opening Day
Signing a franchise agreement is a major milestone, but it is also when the real development process begins.
For a new Abel's Bagels franchisee, the months between signing and opening are focused on turning the plan into an operating restaurant.
1. Find and Approve the Right Site
One of the first major steps is securing a location.
A good site involves much more than finding an available storefront. Visibility, traffic patterns, parking, access, demographics, nearby businesses, lease terms, and the physical layout of the space can all matter.
Abel's works with franchisees during the site evaluation process, while the franchisee ultimately remains responsible for selecting and securing the location.
2. Finalize the Lease, Design, and Buildout
Once a site is approved, attention moves toward the physical restaurant.
Depending on the condition of the space, this can involve architectural plans, permitting, construction, equipment installation, signage, utilities, and inspections.
Some locations may require more work than others, which is why development timelines can vary considerably.
3. Complete Training and Build the Team
While the store is being developed, the franchisee also needs to prepare for operations.
That means learning the Abel's Bagels system, understanding food preparation and bagel production, building a team, and developing the leadership needed to operate consistently.
Hiring should begin early enough that employees can be properly trained before opening day.
4. Prepare for Opening
As construction nears completion, hundreds of smaller details begin coming together.
Equipment must be tested. Inventory must arrive. Team members need practice. Technology needs to work. Marketing should begin introducing the new Abel's location to the surrounding community.
Then comes opening day.
How Long Does the Process Take?
The current Abel's Bagels Franchise Disclosure Document states that the typical period from signing a franchise agreement to opening is approximately three to six months, although permitting, construction, financing, site selection, training, and other factors can affect the timeline.
The goal is not simply to open quickly. It is to open prepared.
For prospective franchisees, signing the agreement is not the finish line. It is the beginning of building the business.
